Homeschooling with ages 3-4: What matters most

Starting homeschooling with little ones can feel exciting and overwhelming all at once- but it doesn’t have to be complicated. If your child is 3-4 years old, here’s a gentle reminder: PLAY is their most important work.

At this age, your child doesn’t need a full curriculum or hours of structured lessons. Instead, their learning should come through hands-on play, read-alouds, and creative exploration.

Read, Read, Read!

Make reading aloud a daily rhythm. Stories build vocabulary, listening skills, and a love for learning. Even 15 minutes a day makes a huge difference. Choose books that delight your child-and you!

Pair Stories with Simple Crafts:

Use your read-alouds as a jumping-off point for fun, easy crafts. This isn’t just for fun- it helps build fine motor skills, focus, and creativity.

Stock Your Playroom Wisely:

Play is powerful. Include open-ended toys like:

  • Blocks and legos (spatial reasoning and creativity)

  • Playdough (fine motor and sensory development)

  • People figures and pretend play (social and emotional growth)

Watch for Readiness:

Every child develops on their own timeline. Some may crave more structure at 4, others not until 6- and that’s OK. Ill be sharing more about how to know when your child is ready for more formal learning in an upcoming post.

Most importantly: keep it simple, keep it joyful and keep Yeshua (Jesus) at the center. Your home is already the best place for your child to grow and learn.
